Summary: The Corporation's registered charities are wholly dedicated to maritime matters. They embrace a wide range of maritime matters and include supporting retired mariners, education in seamanship, the safety and welfare of mariners and their dependants, the advancement of safe navigation and public awareness of the nation's maritime importance.
Note/Restrictions: The Trinity House Maritime Charity provides 18 almshouses in Walmer, Kent, for retired mariners and their spouse/partner, and the widows/widowers of late mariners who are in financial need. Each almshouse is a two-bedroom self contained bungalow, designed with the older person in mind, overlooking extensive gardens and grounds. Applicants must normally not be less than 60 years of age, have at least 15 years of service at sea and be able to demonstrate financial need. Scholarships are awarded to enable cadets to qualify as Deck or Engineer Officer in the Merchant Navy. Training and scholarships are normally of 3-4 years duration. Charitable grants are available for registered charities whose aims and objectives are compatible with those of Trinity House, i.e. for the advancement of education, safety and welfare of mariners or safety of shipping generally.
