Summary: The Society provides financial aid to ex-mariners and their dependants in retirement and those who are unable to work at sea owing to accident, illness, disability or for compassionate reasons. Support can be in the form of a regular grant. The circumstances of regular beneficiaries are normally reviewed every three years.

Financial Support for those affected by COVID 19: We understand that during these times of uncertainty there may be an increased need for financial support among the fishing and merchant maritime community, including for those facing redundancy. In light of this the Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has established a £1M COVID-19 Response Fund to provide financial support to UK merchant seafarers and fishers affected by the coronavirus pandemic. We therefore encourage anyone who is in need at this time to contact our grants team.

Note/Restrictions: The Shipwrecked Mariners’ Society has supported seafarers through crisis for 181 years and continues to do so as we navigate this latest challenge. Support is available to UK and Irish citizens throughout the British Isles. Applicants must meet set criteria and be receiving all the state benefits to which they are entitled. A minimum of five years’ sea service is required.
