Summary: The Marine Society was the world's first seafarers’ charity. It provides a range of services to seafarers and shore-based maritime professionals to enhance learning and well-being, and to facilitate personal and professional career development. No organisation has more experience of delivering high-quality, flexible learning at sea or of placing the well-being of seafarers first.
Note/Restrictions: Learning: manage and co-ordinate training programmes from mainstream providers for delivery at sea. Tutor-supported distance learning in a broad range of subjects and levels to suit all ages, abilities and aspirations. Enters seafarers for public examinations and conducts them at sea.
Financial Support: a range of scholarship programmes for individuals to support professional career development. Administers J W Slater Fund in conjunction with Nautilus International that offers scholarships for ratings to achieve their first Officer of the Watch certificate. Interest-free loans are also available to UK seafarers for study programmes.
